Wayne L Carter

June 19, 1941 - September 24, 2022

Class of '59

Wayne was born in Glenwood, MB and after a courageous battle with cancer passed away peacefully
surrounded by loved ones in VGH, Victoria, B.C.

Wayne enjoyed family activities, time spent with loved ones, travel and creating and meeting the variety
of challenges and accomplishment in the Heritage BC field.

As part of the Manitoba cricket team, they won the Canadian Championship and were inducted into the
MB Sports Hall of Fame.

Wayne met and married his DMCI high school sweetheart – Marian Dunning. They shared a loving
relationship , a love of music and choral singing which continued over their 57 years together and as
part of their United Church choir.

He was a devoted father to David and Catherine, making time to attend dance recitals, band concerts
and other events they were interested and involved in.

Wayne spent 14 years with the MB Dept of Economic Development and Tourism and 5 years in Freight
and Passenger Sales with the CNR in Winnipeg. His love of things “old” like stations and trains led to his
being the “contact” for steam powered trains e.g. Royal Hudson – and for being involved with
maintaining and operating as both Board Director and Secretary.

In 1981, the family moved to Victoria where he was the Director of the Heritage Branch, Ministry of
Small Business, Tourism and Culture; and Executive Officer of the BC Heritage Trust.

Wayne was known for his friendly, positive outlook and his “can do” attitude accompanied with his
radiant smile, and was always a sharply dressed gentleman.

He leaves to mourn his loss – his beloved wife Marian, daughter Catherine Carter and grandson Liam;
son David; sister Audy and Bruce (brother-in-law); sister Carole and Gene (pre-deceased)Sobie, niece
Nancy and husband Mike, great nieces Isabella and Savannah; niece Susan and husband Dwight; nephew
Greg and wife Megan; nephew Stephen and Wife Megan, great-nieces Audrey and Adele; nephew
Stephen and wife Devon; nephew Michael and wife Marissa and great-nephews Carter and Griffin, many
cousins, and dear friends who have provided love and care over the years.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice or a donation of blood to the
Canadian Blood Services in Wayne’s memory.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
